Jean-Jacques Girard is one of Savigny-lès-Beaune’s most storied producers, with roots going back to some of the oldest vines in the village. And this Bourgogne Chardonnay ‘Combe d’Orange’ is, quite simply, one of the best value white Burgundies we stock. Fermented and aged for 10 months in oak, it has a depth and complexity that belies its appellation — this is a wine that drinks well above its station. The nose is elegant and inviting, with ripe apple, a subtle hint of toasted hazelnut, and a lovely vanilla and brioche note from the oak. On the palate it’s beautifully textured, with a buttery richness, a soft, integrated acidity, and a long, satisfying finish with that characteristic Burgundian minerality running through it. At £28.99, it punches well above its weight — and that’s not something we say lightly about a white Burgundy.
