Les Pierres Blanches — the white stones. It is a name that tells you everything about the terroir from which this wine comes: the pale, luminous limestone soils of the Mâconnais, where the ancient seabed geology of southern Burgundy creates conditions of quite extraordinary quality for the production of Chardonnay of a mineral freshness, an aromatic generosity, and a textural richness that is entirely and distinctively its own. Saint-Véran is the southernmost white Burgundy appellation — a name that sits in the shadow of its more celebrated neighbour Pouilly-Fuissé, sharing much of the same limestone terroir and the same sun-drenched Mâconnais landscape, but offering a quality and a character that stands comparison with the finest expressions of the appellation at a considerably more approachable price. Cave de Prisse is one of the Mâconnais’s most respected and long-established co-operatives — a producer with deep roots in the region and a commitment to quality that has made their wines some of the most reliable and characterful expressions of Mâconnais Chardonnay available. The 2024 Les Pierres Blanches is a wine of real charm and immediate appeal: peach, orange blossom, and honeysuckle on the nose — aromatic, generous, and completely inviting. On the palate it is soft and rounded, with ripe peach, honey notes, and citrus fruits, a touch of creamy vanilla that adds warmth and texture, and a fresh, zesty, mineral finish that speaks directly of the white limestone soils from which it takes its name. Saint-Véran at its most generous, most characterful, and most completely itself.
