If Puligny-Montrachet is the most celebrated white wine village in the world, Saint-Aubin is its best-kept secret. Tucked just behind Puligny on the western side of the Côte de Beaune, Saint-Aubin shares the same limestone soils, the same Chardonnay vines, and many of the same winemakers — yet carries a fraction of the name recognition, and with it, a fraction of the price. For those in the know, it is one of Burgundy’s great discoveries. Domaine Gérard Thomas is one of Saint-Aubin’s finest and most respected producers, and the Champ Tirant vineyard — a small, beautifully situated plot on the western side of the village — is the source of this quietly exceptional white Burgundy. The winemaking is meticulous: barrel fermented with 25% new oak, followed by ten months in cask with regular lees stirring that builds a lovely depth of flavour and a creamy, textured richness that is the hallmark of the domaine’s style. The result is a wine of real elegance and completeness: ripe citrus and fresh peach on the nose, with a palate that offers a touch of caramel richness and vanilla creaminess alongside delicate lemon and lime, beautifully rounded and balanced, with a persistence of flavour that carries right through to a long, satisfying finish. Saint-Aubin at its finest — and a wine that will delight anyone who loves great white Burgundy.
