A genuinely intriguing white from Tuscany, the Primavolta from Vignano is a rare and characterful blend of Viognier and Petit Manseng — two aromatic varieties that are far more at home in the Rhône and Gascony respectively, but which have found a compelling new voice in the Tuscan hills. The nose is rich and expressive, with ripe pear, baked apple, and a hint of pineapple, lifted by the floral, apricot-tinged aromatics that Viognier does so well. On the palate it’s full-bodied yet surprisingly crisp and fresh, with a lovely tension between the wine’s natural richness and a bright, clean acidity that carries through to a long, satisfying finish. For those who like their whites with a bit of personality.
