Paso Robles is one of California’s most exciting wine regions, and for Syrah in particular it has few rivals on the West Coast. J. Lohr is one of the appellation’s most respected producers, and the South Ridge Syrah is a beautiful expression of what makes Paso so compelling — the warm days, cool nights, and diverse soils that allow Syrah to ripen fully while retaining the freshness and spice that make it so distinctive. What sets this apart from a straightforward varietal Syrah is the Rhône-inspired blending: Mourvèdre adds structure and a lovely savoury depth, while a touch of Viognier — a classic Northern Rhône co-fermentation technique — lifts the aromatics and adds a beguiling floral note that gives the wine real elegance and length. The nose is gorgeous — ripe cherry, violet, white pepper, and a warm spice note that is immediately inviting. On the palate it’s juicy and spicy, with a lovely freshness and a long, satisfying finish. California Syrah at its most characterful and food-friendly.
