Baleia is the only winery on the Lower Duiwenhoksrivier in Vermaaklikheid — a remote stretch of South Africa’s southern coast where pure solid limestone meets a maritime climate that puts a very distinctive character into the wines. Baleia is Portuguese for whale, and the estate sits near St. Sebastien Bay, one of South Africa’s great whale nurseries. The soils are chalky, the climate is cool, and the wines have a minerality and salinity that you simply don’t find elsewhere.

The 2022 Chardonnay is, frankly, a bit of a steal. Ripe stone fruit, citrus and a touch of toast on the nose. On the palate it’s supple and generous, with a lovely creamy texture, vibrant acidity and a finish that keeps going long after you’d expect it to at the price. This tastes like a wine that should cost considerably more than it does — and at £90 for six, it’s the kind of offer you stock up on.
