Stark-Condé were named in the ‘First Growth’ category of Tim Atkin’s special South Africa report in 2019, which tells you everything you need to know about where they sit in the pecking order. Winemaker Rudger van Wyk was named Young Winemaker of the Year the same year — and the wines have only got better since.
The 2021 vintage is a particularly special one — and not just because it’s brilliant. Much of the Jonkershoek Valley was affected by devastating fires at harvest time, meaning production was tiny. Thankfully all the Cabernet Sauvignon grapes were picked before the fires hit, and the resulting wine is something rather special.
Rose petals, violets, cassis, graphite and cherry pipe tobacco on the nose — then a palate of juicy blueberries, black cherries and blackcurrant, with fine supple tannins and a long, pure, mouthwatering finish. It’s drinking beautifully now and will age effortlessly for 10+ years. Greg Sherwood MW gave it 96 points and called it one of the best value premium Cabernets in the Cape. Decanter agreed — also 96 points. We’re not going to argue.
