Late Bottled Vintage Port is one of the wine world’s great unsung pleasures — and if you’ve never explored it beyond the standard Ruby, this is the bottle to start with. LBV is made from the fruit of a single declared vintage, aged in oak for four to six years before bottling — longer than a standard Ruby, giving it greater depth, complexity, and a more developed character, but without the decades of cellaring that a true Vintage Port demands. The result is a wine that is ready to drink now, but with all the richness and intensity of a serious Port. Poças is one of the Douro’s most respected family-owned Port houses, with a history stretching back over a century, and their 2020 LBV is a beautiful example of the style. Deep ruby red in the glass, with a nose of dried fruit, blueberries, and sweet spices that is immediately inviting. On the palate it’s rich and generous, with a lovely silky texture, a wonderful depth of fruit and spice, and a finish that, as the winemaker might say, just goes on forever. Serve slightly chilled with a good blue cheese, dark chocolate, or simply on its own after dinner. At £28.99, it is exceptional value for Port of this quality and character.
