If the Clos Berthet white showed you Pernand-Vergelesses at its most ethereal, this is the village at its most earthy and profound.
Red Pernand-Vergelesses is one of the Côte de Beaune’s most underappreciated pleasures — a Pinot Noir of real character and depth that sits in the shadow of its more famous neighbours Beaune and Volnay, yet offers a distinctly different and deeply compelling expression of the grape. Dubreuil-Fontaine’s roots in these vineyards run deep, and their village red is made with the same rigour and respect for terroir that defines everything they produce. The 2019 vintage was exceptional — a warm, generous year that gave the Pinot Noir extraordinary ripeness and concentration, and six years in bottle have allowed the wine to settle into a beautiful, complex maturity. Deep and bright in the glass, with a nose that is at once elegant and earthy: ripe red cherry, wild strawberry, and a lovely mellow berry softness, layered with notes of forest floor, damp earth, and a subtle woodland spice that is the unmistakable signature of aged village Burgundy. On the palate it is structured and serious, with a lovely natural sap and vitality, fine-grained tannins, and a long, rewarding finish that speaks of both the vintage and the terroir. A wine that rewards patience — and will continue to develop beautifully for another five to ten years. At £47.99, it is village Burgundy of the highest order.
